The best help is the help a family stops needing

A food parcel lasts two weeks. A sewing machine lasts for years, and it does something a food parcel never can: it moves the family from receiving to earning.

A widow with a sewing machine sews clothes for the neighbours and charges for it. A father with a fruit cart buys stock in the morning and sells throughout the day. A rickshaw is a whole workplace on three wheels. None of them needs to ask for help again next month.

This is also the gift that is hardest to measure, and we will not claim anything we cannot document. But we know what a work tool is worth to the person who receives it: it is the difference between waiting and working.

«The one who strives to help a widow or a poor person is like one who fights in the cause of Allah, or like one who fasts by day and prays by night.»
Sahih al-Bukhari, 6006
